I love watching nature playout in the great outdoors. There are lessons to be learned by our wildlife friends. Each year, I see squirrels hiding nuts for the winter season, sometimes burying them once and then reburying them all over again. I’ve found acorns hidden in wood piles and in the crook of tree branches and yet with all of their ingenuity, squirrels can lose as much as twenty-five percent of their hidden treasure to other wildlife thieves, such as bird, chipmunks and other squirrels; and if that’s not bad enough, a study completed by the University of Richmond pointed out that squirrels can forget where they’ve placed most of the acorns that they’ve buried, for later, when they’re hungry and really need them. I guess their forgetfulness is God’s way of creating forests of Oak trees. It’s great for the forest; but, not so great for the poor squirrel who worked so hard to plan for their own future.
Do you know where your nuts are? A lot of what we do with the Financialoscopy process is documenting your life, your financial life; knowing where are your nuts are. We’ve seen new clients with multiple accounts at multiple institutions, numerous 401(K)s with numerous former employers and out-of-date insurance policies with uncertain coverages that are long overdue for a review and adjustment, if appropriate. You’ve worked hard for all the nuts you’ve collected along the way and have stored away for your financial winter. Sometimes you just need to have someone else to look over your stash, to make sure that your treasured nuts are well hidden from the thieves of time, taxes and neglect. Now that springtime has arrived, perhaps it’s time to think about squirreling money aside for your future; but, not like an unorganized squirrel who might be spending most of their time planting someone else’ future forest, instead of squirreling away a solid future for themselves.
