Another year, another clean bill of health. But what did I learn from my early-morning annual physical? I made sure to avoid caffeine and skipped my workout before the appointment to ensure my blood pressure would be normal. But was it?
Every year, I follow the same routine. A week before my physical, I go in for lab work. They test my A1C, LDL, HDL, and other markers that, truthfully, I don’t fully understand. What I do know is that my sugar levels are right where they should be, and my cholesterol is within the proper range. My lab results came back fine, but then it was time for the doctor’s visit. The first step was checking my weight and height, which was a bit disheartening. They must be moving the tape measure because I’m convinced, I’ve shrunk a couple of inches since high school.
Next, the nurse brought in a blood pressure machine, a change from their usual practice of taking it manually. The machine squeezed my arm so tightly that I could feel the blood surging to my fingertips. Then she told me that my blood pressure was slightly high, and that I’d need to discuss it with the doctor. While waiting for the doctor, I felt a pang of anxiety. Would this be the year I’d have to start taking medication? Would I need to change my diet or exercise routine?
When the doctor finally came in, we talked about how the year had been. He mentioned that the clinic had experienced issues with the machines reporting high readings and offered to take my blood pressure manually. He put on his stethoscope and listened carefully. My bottom number was good, and, to my relief, my top number was fine as well. My blood pressure was normal. As I was leaving, I jokingly asked if the machines needed re-calibration, and the doctor just chuckled.
So, what’s the takeaway from all of this? First, my health is in good shape, and I’m excited to tackle 2025 with energy. But more importantly, when it comes to your life—whether financial or otherwise—are you putting too much trust in machines or AI when you should be seeking guidance from an expert? If you rely solely on an algorithm or a website from a financial firm for advice, how do you know it’s tailored to your unique situation? Has that machine been calibrated specifically for you?
The reason we go for annual physicals is for that hands-on, expert evaluation. You want a professional’s assessment of your physical, mental, spiritual, and financial well-being. Relying solely on technology leaves you in the dark about whether it’s aligned with who you are. At our office, we prioritize personal calibration. We embrace high-tech solutions, but more importantly, we believe in a high-touch approach.
As 2024 comes to a close and we look ahead to 2025, take a moment to reflect. Are you getting the outcomes you deserve? Are you achieving what you truly want?
