After Claiming Your Independence

The United States is governed under a Living document. Are your financial plans also being governed by a Living document?

This last weekend, our nation celebrated the 4th of July. It was 247 years ago in 1776 that congress adopted the Declaration of Independence from Great Britain. However, many people are surprised to learn that it wasn’t until 8 years later that a Constitution for the United States was drafted and ratified to run a brand-new country.

Have you also proclaimed financial independence in your life? Pursuing the dream of life, liberty, and happiness requires more than just a declaration. It requires some sort of documentation, a plan. In your case, it requires a personal constitution for how you are going to accomplish that dream. Over the period of almost two and a half centuries, the constitution has changed along with the United States. It is literally a living document so that things can be added or sometimes subtracted as the nation grows. You cannot have a one and done document. Back in 1788, when the United States Constitution was ratified, it was not created to be a static document. They knew it would need changes because the nation was still in its infancy, going through growing pains. Even today, things are adjusted in our laws and our regulations when it is time to make those changes.

So, have you claimed your independence, your financial independence? Do you have a plan? Hopefully, you’re not going to also wait 8 years to put that plan into action. Can that plan also change with the times as the world changes around you? If you don’t know what that means, then you are living in a past tense. You are living in the past. You are not thinking forward-based. You’re not thinking into the future. To be able to be successful, just like a country, you need three things: you need to claim your independence, you need to have a plan of action and how you will govern your financial life, and you have to have the tools in place to make adjustments to your plan on a regular basis so that you can have the dream of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

If you have not been thinking about your plan, your living document, to reach your dream of financial independence, perhaps today is the day to begin.
